Tube feeding kit is literally a lifesaver when a puppy cannot nurse on its own owing to weakness or cleft palate. We also need to supplement newborn puppies if they are not getting the proper nutrition required and are not gaining weight daily as expected. Sometimes, you may need to administer drugs to newborn and the puppy may not like the taste. This kit will come in handy.
This is faster and safer if handle by a trained hand because the puppy cannot aspirate liquid like in the case of bottle feeding. The puppy also swallow less air than when being bottle fed. It is faster than bottle feeding, hence more puppies can be fed within a short time.
The kit is reusable and therefore saves you money. It should be sterilized in hot water before and after use to keep the kit hygienic. The hot water also makes the tube soft and flexible for easy use.
Note: Tube Feeding is the only satisfactory way to give formula or extracted breast milk to a puppy that is too weak to suck or has cleft palate.
STEPS TO BE TAKEN WHEN TUBE FEEDING PUPPIES
Measure the length of tube that should reach the stomach of the puppy. This is done by measuring the tube, holding it along the body of the puppy, and measure from the tip of the mouth to the last rib. Mark the stop point on the tube. When you insert the tube into the puppy and you do not get to the marked point, you are in the lung, not the stomach. See picture below:
Having done the above, arouse the puppy and place it on a surface flat resting on its chest. Moisten the tip of the tube with the formula to be fed. Briefly allow the puppy to suckle on it. Then pass the tube over the tongue into the throat. Push down with a steady pressure through the esophagus into the stomach. It is in the stomach when the marked portion on the tube is reached.
Inject 1 or 2ml of water into the tube to be sure the tube is not in the lungs. If the puppy coughs or gasps, it means the tube passes through the trachea by mistake. It has entered the lungs. Withdraw the tube and reposition it. You need to test with water because the formula can be dangerous in the lungs of the puppy.
If the tube is found to be in the right position, attached the syringe with the formula to the tube. Then slowly press to deposit its content into the stomach of the puppy.
