Occupying your digital space as a dog breeder

We have many successful businesses that are unable to put their brands on the social media; Facebook,Twitter, Instagram and so on, because their space has been taken. They are left with a clone-like account to put their brands on the social media. Do not blame them. They were building the businesses physically and when it was time to go digital, other businesses have taken the space.

The case is like running an unregistered business for 10 years with a lot of customers and you now decide to register the business. Alas! It has been taken by another business. What will happen to the clients you have gained using the old name? First, you will be left with no other option than to register a different name other than the one you have built for so many years. Sad isn’t it?

Let us limit our concentration to dog breeding, though my opinion can be related to other businesses and vocations. As a dog breeder, after selecting the breed(s) of dog you want to deal with in your program, it is necessary that you create a kennel name. That is the name you will be identified with. Now that you have created the name, what is next?

You are not going to be a one-time dog breeder since you plan to breed, rather than becoming a dog breeder because two dogs accidentally mated. It is good if you ‘occupy’ your space in the books of the Corporate Affairs Commission(CAC) as a business name or any other level of registration available. This will give you the sole right to use your kennel name. Come to think of it, in your locality, you will know one or two dog breeders that share kennel name with another dog breeder. The name belongs to the person that registers it first, irrespective of  who bears the name first or is known with the name first. Now that you have registered your business, you still need to go some steps further in this digital era.

This will lead us to, taking our space in the social media platforms like Facebook, twitter, Instagram etc.  It will be painful if the username of your kennel has been registered by another person on the social media. Social media is the next level in products marketing and you do not want your efforts of so many years to go down the drain. People have established small businesses without a vision for the future, but events mocked at their foresight. The businesses are now big and the names they started with are no longer available at Corporate Affairs Commission or have been taken on the social media space by other people.

It is advisable that you create and block other people from stealing your business name and social media space from you. This is called reservation of accounts on social media. It will be good if you create the necessary accounts, even though they have no content. When the time comes that you need the accounts, you can then be active on the platforms and develop your contents to gain followers.

Digital marketing is the key in this generation, take advantage of it to boost your business. Occupy your digital space before it is stolen from you.
